Sir,

I am directed by Secretary Sir E. Grey to acknowledge receipt of your despatch No. 21 of December 14th last, requesting instructions as to the payment for the maintenance of prisoners sent to serve sentences in the country of their origin.

In reply, I am to inform you that both the Secretary of State for the Colonies and the Secretary of State for India have concurred in the view held by this Department that such expenses should be borne by the Colony of which the prisoner is a native, or by Indian revenues as the case may be,
